A Mother's Job

by Brittany Hunt
(West Seattle, WA)

(Derived from Natasha Niemi's poem "Your Check")

It's Mother's Day
And I have thanks to send
You’re more than my mom
You’re my friend

Thank you for
your unconditional love
And for showing me
what beauty is made of

Thank you for teaching me
how to meet a deadline wire
You never accepted poor effort
so I always aimed higher

And now that I'm grown
and on my own
it is a time to reflect
If all this is a mother’s job
You never got a check
