CACOPHONY

by Amita Jadhav
(Kolhapur, Maharashtra, India)

I can hear
Winds howl and whistle
Silk curtains swish and rustle.

I can hear
Doors creak and groan
Floorboards crack and moan.

I can hear
Clocks tick and chime
Sirens wail and whine.

I can hear
Bells peal and jingle
Phones ring and tinkle.

I can hear
Trumpets honk and blow
Motorcycles zoom and roar.

I can hear
Hammers clang and clunk
Train-wheels grind and plunk.

I can hear
Motor-cars toot and beep
Jets scream and shriek.

I often wonder how
In spite of all that noise
I can still hear a human voice!
