Child Child

by Vickie Cook
(Washington)

child child run and play
learn to hide your hurts away.
Learn to run and jump and shout
but never let your feelings out.

child child dry those tears.
put them away for years and years.
Hide them high upon a shelf.
Hide them even from yourself.

Call it laughter when it's pain.
Call it sunshine when it's rain.

child child jump a stone
know that you are all alone.

child child jump a rope
count to ten and give up hope.
