Finally Free

by Kimberley Ann Mcmurtrie
(Dalbeattie, SW Scotland)

I sit and watch his shallow breathing
Broken
Fearful
Disbelieving
My heart is hollow, hope is dying
Torn apart by constant lying

He sold his soul for one last fix
Up again to his old tricks
Oblivious to all he harms
A slave to those narcotic charms

His mother's tears, his family's shame
Desperation
Anger
Blame
They pray for that elusive day
He'll change and take their pain away

His breathing slows, his skin grows pale
I cry for help to no avail
Cold hand in mine he slips away
His life the price he's had to pay

The demons inside were far too strong
They made his choices all so wrong
Now as his body's laid to ground
His soul can soar, his freedom found

I've never had to go through this personally nor my loved ones, but reading this put me right there as if it was happening to me. Feeling helpless and useless because this loved one is solely in control of how everything turns out and the pain of the loss. Brilliant job

Haunting

As an ex drug addict this poem really hit home to me and made me see things through the eyes of my loved ones. Very well written and hard hitting, you can really feel the emotion as you're reading it. Very well written.
