Fire

by Kristin Nelson
(Tucson, AZ)

Crashing and crackling wood surrounds me
Flashing red and blue lights approach
Police, firemen and sirens everywhere
I see the layer of colors
Orange, yellow, red, blue
Sizzle! Crack! Whoosh! Boom!
Burning ashes smother the air around me
My lungs breathe gray smoke
I am so hot
I feel bolts of fire striking my skin
Pounding hard, every beat of my heart is heard
Hot flames rising
With rushes of water blasting the building
Hoping to stop the destruction
Suddenly the fire has vanished
Smokey air fills the empty space
Only victims and sadness remain
And emptiness
I am alone
With Silence
