Her Heart

by Amanda Blanchard
(North Carolina)

her heart was torn
with gnarled claws
stuck deep within her chest

hot breath kissed
her cheek and lips -
glowed eyes emptied her soul

blood dripped heavily
upon her gown -
her heart ripped out
easily like taffy
pinched with chubby fingers

she took a heart -
she cheated death -
she swallowed another soul

defeated creatures
lost their feast
and had to let her go

now she flies with her glowed eyes
and soars beyond the clouds
for she's no longer bound with fears -
her heart has made her new
