In the Blackout

by Kristen
(Chicago, IL)

I remember you…
That time we sat alone in the dark
clutching each other in helpless fright
screaming for help, while no help would arrive—
And the darkness surrounded us.

I had no one but you to pull me from the abyss,
I held on to your shirt,
felt the cloth through my fingertips.
And while I was terrified, some part was comforted
because I knew
as you clung on to me,
you felt the same thing.
