Loss

by McCollonough Ceili
(Nashville, TN and Ireland)

The smell of loss is the aroma of burning wood.
It stays with you long after the fire is gone.
It tastes like sour fruit
That has spent too much time in the sun.
A sea of salt water fills your heart
And overflows into your eyes.
Loss has a sound so loud it can make you shake,
Yet, at the same moment, can be so quiet that those around you don't even hear it.
It makes you feel like you are in a whirlwind of emotions,
With no calming eye.
