One Wild Goose

by Esther Thornburg
(Cantril, Iowa, USA)

A wild goose honked alone.
Why did he fly from home?
He has something to say
At the early break of day.

Did she, on the nest, have to stay?
Has tragedy come their way?
Only time can tell
If all is well.

Will little ones be, and swim on,
And cross some distant pond?
Do they have cares of the day
With fears of, come what may?

At the dawning of the day
The goose had something to say
As he made his flight
In the breaking of morning light.
