Rock and Wave

by Aleta Gantt
(Yakima, WA)

I am the rock
Stead fast and sturdy
You are the wave
crashing against me

From your ocean of selfish
I am battered and cracked
Dragging and pulling
You never give back

Grounded and strong
I try to keep standing
But you're rushing in
Water eroding

You beat this rock
Til I cannot stand
But one rock becomes
A million grains of sand

Ground up fine
To a sun-kissed beach
Your tide too low
For you to reach

I was the rock
Stead fast and sturdy
You were the wave
Who could not defeat me
