San Gabriel House

by Lily Hough
(Oklahoma City, OK)

You lie spent by my side in the dark
in a sweet blue-and-white room
your breath quickens just before sleep
I don't know you in so many ways

I lie on my side, eyes closed
hear the rain falling on glass
you sigh, I touch your shoulder
I'm lulled by your heartbeat, your breath

The rain stops, I still lie awake
sleepless but strangely at ease
with my head on your chest in the dark
I know you in so many ways
