The Father and Son

by LAMONT Gary
(Winchester, VA)

Looking back on my darker days
trying to find some brighter ones,
still worried about my past mistakes
hopefully I learn from some,
my pops wasn't there
never really knew his son,
I guess he never cared
to see what I'd become,
this road seems far and long
you could have held the map for me,
but instead you treated me like a casualty,
I just wanted you to be proud of me,
but I guess crack was more important
because you started using more than casually,
I guess you were trying to escape the world
and the pain it caused,
but you left your baby boy all alone
so tell me what's a bigger loss?..
