"The Hill"

by Dr. F. D. Epperson
(Knoxville, TN)

I met a man the other day,
Just talked with him along the way;
He bragged to me about his boy,
Who once was young, and full of joy;
But then he grew to be a man,
And served with pride on foreign land;
"The orders came to 'Take the hill!'
And my son fought with all his will;
And now he rests much closer home,
With fallen heroes - not alone.
He rests up there - upon That hill,
Our Flag flies o'er where he lies still;
He gave his life for us to be -
A Grateful Nation of People, Free."
