The Ladder

by Ashley M.
(Massachusetts)

The ladder of success
Has many bars to climb
One of many faults
Is leaving your past behind.

For to be the best at something
Requires the challenge to change
As to switch the role you are playing
But continue that same game

And when you reach the top of the ladder
and you look down below
You'll see how high you can climb
and just how far you can go

But I once slipped on that ladder
And fell right to the base
With bruises on my arms
And scars slashed on my face

But the brave get up quickly
And get back onto track
because with trying comes mistakes
It's not always easy to look back

A faithful friend once said to me
To always look ahead
I replied to her
Look too far, and you'll see yourself dead.
