Wayward Bullet

by Debbie Holroyd
(Florida)

Who is the one with such dazed and dreamy eyes?
You shouldn't look at them my fair and faithful one,
But if you do...look closer...it's coming over here
And it's got a gun

The words that I tell you, I'm sorry to say
It was painfully clear
How it was in one and out the other ear
How quickly death comes near

Oh, but what the hell
I guess it's just as well
Now I feel my bladder swell
On the floor, I just heard a shell

Silence now...I don't hear a damned thing
Looking at the man, but I can't hear what he sings
Body jolts, then a quiver
Won't be long now before I am in the ground or wherever
