Beneath the Colors

by Daniqua Perkins
(Denver, Colorado U.S.)

red and black...
whats up with that?
seening the scraps
putting their shoes in the sewer like a filthy rat.
drive through the the hood yellin swoooop!
other gangs shootin at you.
now here i am in the pin.
counting all of the times i have sinned.
red and black...
i have started smoking crack
beneath the colors my skin is beautiful and black.
there's no way out i got caught up.
I'm staring down at myself while the doctors pull the bullets out of my guts...
pow pow pow pow!!! they busted at me
red and black...
they took my life away
now they all think i don't got nothing to say.
I'm in the sky wondering why
i always fought for red and black
